Chapter Eight

Beel had left room before me and while I was on my way to the bathroom I overheard Lucifer and Beel. I’m not one to eavesdrop so I continued on my way, they just happened to be in my way. I heard that Lucifer apparently pledged his loyalty to Diavolo after they fell to the Devildom, though Beel doesn’t seem to know why. No surprise to be honest. If he doesn’t want you to know, that’s that. When they finally realized I was walking towards them they quickly stopped their conversation.

“Pardon me,” I said, “I’m heading to the bathroom. Sorry to interrupt.”

“That’s quite alright,” Lucifer spoke first, of course, “this conversation was over anyways. Right, Beel?”

“Yeah, right,” Beel lied, “I’m gonna go downstairs for breakfast now.”

He left and Lucifer addressed me again, “So, what did you hear?”

“I wasn’t eavesdropping I’ll have you know. I’m literally going to the bathroom. Excuse me, please.”

I pushed past him to the bathroom to do my morning routine. I’m sure I annoyed Lucifer but I honestly really needed to pee. It’s their fault for having what was obviously a private conversation in the middle of the damn hallway. After I was done getting ready for the day I dropped my dirty clothes in my hamper in Beel’s room. Lucifer was awaiting me outside the door.

“This is starting to feel a bit stalker-y,” I joked. He was not amused.

“You didn’t answer my question earlier. But now we have plenty of time to walk to the dining room,” he left no room for discussion in his voice.

“I wasn’t trying to, you guys were having it in the middle of the only hallway to the bathroom. All I heard was that you pledged your loyalty to Diavolo. And, like, okay? Doesn’t really change anything.”

He didn’t really know how to take my nonchalant answer, “You’re not going to ask why? I thought you were the curious sort?”

“Of course I’m curious. But, I generally know when not to ask certain questions. If you wanted me to know, you’d tell me. The attic was a silly little thing. A reason to pledge loyalty is much more intimate, and if your brother’s don’t know. Then why should I?

A sort of sad smile formed on his face, “Make sure that kindness of yours doesn’t get you killed. Demons are sure to take advantage of it.”

“So do humans, demons ain’t that special,” I smiled, hoping at some point I’d find a joke he’d find amusing.

“I suppose that’s true,” he mused, “Doesn’t take much to kill a human.”

“Seriously though, a human can drown in two inches of water. But, on the other hand humans have survived insanely high falls with minimal injury. Our durability is very unreliable.”

That actually got a chuckle out of him and we finally joined the others for breakfast and went about our own days. I did a bunch of random things, drawing, reading, studying for the week, etc. I was able to get Beel to actually take his bed that night and went to speak to Belphegor when everyone was asleep.

“Hello again, Drizzm,” he greeted me at the door, “Any news?”

“Not particularly,” I wanted to get more information about the situation, “I know you probably won’t tell me, but why is your hatred for humanity stronger than your love for your family? What did humans do to Lilith?”

He glared at me, “What would you know?”

“I don’t. That’s why I’m asking,” I sighed, “I’m not in the habit to force people to talk about stuff but if you guys don’t start communication then your family will be broken forever.”

“It already is,” he seemed genuinely sad.

“Look. I don’t know what happened, no one wants to tell me so I can help. But, if this is related to her then I think you all could use some group therapy. You guys need to learn to listen and communicate.”

“Are you finished lecturing me on something you know nothing about?”

“Are you finished keeping me in the dark so I can be better informed?”

He didn’t answer.

“Don’t forget that I’m your hope out of the attic. You’d do well to think about what I said. Is your hatred for humanity more important than your family? Including Beel? Good night Belphegor. I hope you can help me.”

I left him, leaving no room to continue the conversation. I was feeling particularly awake so I went to the planetarium. I spend time here when I can’t sleep. It’s always night in the Devildom so the stars are always out, but the planetarium showed the constellations. Crazy that this house has a planetarium but only one bathroom. And they think that’s fine for 6 people to share a single bathroom. If only I had my own bathroom like Asmo. Maybe I could ask Lucifer if when they fix my room they could add a bathroom to it. I stared at the stars for a few hours before going to Beel’s room and laying on the couch to rest my body a bit more before school.
